Mother
Goose flies on a goose ~ She reads with a dog ~
She sits with children. Sometimes
she's shown as a person ~ other times she's depicted as a goose. Every illustrator
has his or her own vision. Here are just a few samples of old Mother Goose
book covers. Many older
books do not carry a publication date. Used-book
and antique dealers "date" books based on knowledge of the publisher's
line. Such professional
assessments list the date with a small "c" to indicate "circa" or "about."
The
wonderful all-in-red Mother Goose below
was part of a promotion by Buri's Holsum Bread, believed
to be pre-1900. The
black & white rendition below it was also a promotion.
